Pride, No Prejudice: Tel Aviv’s LGBT Film Festival
Jul 26, 2010
Tel Aviv is known as the party city of Israel, and every summer it gets an extra boost with Pride month. The city shows off its pride with rainbow colors, parades, beach parties, festivals and more. A special highlight is the LGBT film festival, which marked its 5th anniversary this year.

A five-day cinematic celebration of different sexualities, the festival hosts viewings of over 120 films, documentaries, and shorts. One can catch films from local talents, as well as from international film festivals like Cannes, Berlin, and Sundance.
Yair Hochner, a native of Kfar Save and a notable film director himself, is responsible for founding the groundbreaking film festival- the first of its kind in Israel. Hochner’s films have won numerous awards, including the Winner of OUTstanding Emerging Talent Award Outfest 2005 and Best Israeli Film at the Eilat International Film Festival. He is passionate about cinema as a social medium, and co-founded TLVFest in 2006 to bring LGBT issues to the forefront of Israeli society. As Hochner explains, “The Festival is not only a cultural act, but also a socio-political statement.” The Festival has proved a wild success, attended by cinematic patrons from all sectors of Israeli society and abroad.
This year’s highlights included its opening feature I Love You, Philip Morris, the true story of a con artist who falls in love with his prison cellmate. Another highly recommended feature being screened is Alon Weinstock’s That’s Gila, That’s Me, the fascinating personal story of one of Israel’s first transgendered persons. With dozens of Israeli national and globally premiered films to choose from, as well as live shows by the French Electro band Plateau Repas, TLVFest is definitely the main cultural attraction of Pride month.
